About Road Markings
Line marking is what turns a plain stretch of tar, asphalt or paving into a road, a yard or a parking area that actually functions: parking bays, drive aisles, disabled bays, no-parking hatching, directional arrows, stop lines and speed bump markings. We mark newly surfaced areas once they've cured enough to take paint properly, and re-mark existing layouts that have faded to the point where nobody can see the lines anymore. This is work we do across driveways, complex and estate roads, business premises, industrial yards and parking areas in Germiston, the East Rand and Johannesburg, either as the finishing step on a surfacing or paving job we've just done, or as standalone work on a surface somebody else laid. A layout only works if it's measured out properly before the first line goes down, not marked by eye on the day.
What's Included
- Measured layout designed to bay and aisle dimensions
- Disabled bays positioned and sized for real accessibility
- Arrows, stop lines and hatching planned to traffic flow
- Layout set out with string lines and chalk first
- Paint or thermoplastic chosen for surface and traffic
- Straight lines and bay edges sprayed by machine
- Symbols and numbered bays applied with stencils
- Cured and reopened to traffic on your schedule
Our Process
- 1
Design the Layout
Every job starts with a measured layout, not a line sprayed by eye. We work out bay and aisle dimensions, position disabled bays where they're actually accessible, and plan arrows, stop lines and hatching against South Africa's road traffic signs framework, set out with string lines and chalk before any paint touches the surface.
- 2
Choose Paint or Thermoplastic
Chlorinated rubber paint suits parking areas, driveways and lower-traffic surfaces, applying quickly and touching up easily. Thermoplastic is heated and applied hot, bonds harder, is more reflective at night and outlasts paint several times over, which makes it worth the extra cost on high-traffic areas and main aisles.
- 3
Apply the Marking
Straight lines and bay edges are sprayed with a line marking machine for a clean, consistent width and edge. Symbols, letters and numbered bays are done with stencils for a sharp, consistent standard, and speed bump markings and hatching are measured and applied the same way.
- 4
Cure and Reopen
Paint needs time to cure before it can take tyre traffic without smearing or picking up; thermoplastic, applied hot, sets as it cools and can generally take traffic again much sooner. We plan the sequence and timing around your access needs and tell you upfront how long the surface needs to be kept clear.

Road Markings FAQ
What do the different road marking colours and lines mean?
White lines are the standard colour for most markings: parking bays, drive aisles, stop lines and directional arrows. Yellow is used where a space is restricted or reserved, such as no-parking hatching or exclusive bays, and disabled parking bays are typically marked with a yellow border along with the wheelchair symbol in the bay itself. Solid lines generally mean don't cross; broken or dashed lines mean the space or lane can be entered when it's clear to do so. We design and mark layouts to these conventions so the finished site reads correctly to anyone driving through it, not just to people who already know the layout.
How long does line marking paint last on tar or asphalt?
It depends mostly on traffic volume and which product was used. On busy parking areas and drive aisles, expect to re-mark somewhere in the region of every twelve to twenty-four months as tyre contact wears the paint down. On lower-traffic surfaces, such as a quiet estate road or a private driveway, a marking can last several years before it needs attention. Thermoplastic markings generally outlast paint by a wide margin because the material bonds harder into the surface and resists wear better. We'll tell you what to expect for your specific surface and traffic level when we quote the job.
What's the difference between thermoplastic and paint road markings?
Paint is applied cold, dries as it's exposed to air, and is the faster and cheaper option for most parking areas and driveways. Thermoplastic is heated to a molten state and sprayed or applied hot, bonds into the surface as it cools, and is significantly more durable and more reflective at night than paint. Thermoplastic costs more upfront but needs re-marking far less often, which makes it the better choice for high-traffic aisles, main routes through a complex or industrial site, and anywhere longevity matters more than the initial cost. We'll recommend whichever suits your traffic and budget rather than defaulting to one option.
What are the standard road marking designations used in South Africa?
South Africa's road traffic signs framework sets out standard designations for common markings, including parking bay marking, exclusive parking bay marking, disabled persons parking marking and no-parking line marking, along with standards for arrows, stop lines and hatching. We work to this framework when we design and mark a layout, rather than to an arbitrary or improvised grid, so the finished site follows a recognised standard rather than something that only makes sense to whoever laid it out.
How wide should a parking bay and a disabled bay be?
Standard parking bay dimensions need to allow a vehicle to park and open its doors without encroaching on the bay next to it, and disabled bays need to be wider again to allow room for a wheelchair or mobility aid alongside the vehicle, which is why disabled bays are marked noticeably wider than a standard bay and identified with a yellow border and the wheelchair symbol. The right dimensions for your site depend on the vehicles using it and the space available, which is part of what we work out when we design the layout rather than applying a fixed template regardless of the site.
